What is live rosin?

Rosin and resin get mixed up constantly, even by budtenders. The difference is one word: solvent.

Solvents used to make live rosin. It is pressed out with heat and pressure, nothing else.

The basics

Pressed, not washed with solvent

Live rosin is a solventless extract. Fresh frozen cannabis is washed in ice water to collect the resin glands (that is bubble hash), the hash is dried, and then it is pressed between heated plates until the oil squeezes out. No butane, no ethanol, nothing to purge afterwards.

Live resin also starts with fresh frozen plants, but the oil is pulled out with a solvent such as butane, which is then purged off under vacuum.

Both keep the "live" terpenes. The method is what sets the price and the texture.

Side by side

Rosin vs resin

Live rosin is the most labor-intensive extract in a dispensary, and the price shows it. A gram of live rosin can cost two to three times a gram of live resin and five times a gram of distillate.

In return you get an oil that some people consider the truest expression of a strain. Whether that is worth the price is a personal call.

Picking one

Should you buy live rosin?

Buy live rosin if flavor is the whole point for you and you want a solventless product. Skip it if you mainly want potency per dollar, because a 90 percent distillate at a third of the price will get you there faster.

A good middle path for most people: a quality distillate all-in-one for everyday, and a live rosin cart as a treat.

Common mistake

Paying for live rosin, then taking long, hot pulls that burn the terpenes off.

Better way

Rosin and resin carts taste best at low heat with short, gentle pulls. Let the flavor do the work.

Good questions

Quick answers

What is live rosin?

Live rosin is a solventless cannabis extract. Fresh frozen plants are washed in ice water to make bubble hash, and the hash is pressed with heat and pressure to squeeze out the oil. No chemical solvent is used.

What is the difference between live rosin and live resin?

Both start with fresh frozen plants. Live resin is extracted with a solvent like butane that is purged off. Live rosin is pressed out with heat and pressure, no solvent. Rosin costs more.

Is live rosin stronger than live resin?

They overlap. Live rosin often tests 65 to 85 percent THC and live resin 60 to 80 percent. Distillate is stronger than both at 85 to 95 percent.

Why is live rosin so expensive?

It takes fresh frozen plants, an ice water wash, drying the hash and pressing it, and the yield is small. It is the most labor-intensive extract on the shelf.

Is rosin the same as resin?

No. Rosin is pressed with heat and pressure and uses no solvent. Resin is extracted with a solvent. The names are one letter apart, which is why they get confused.
