Does THC percentage matter?
It is the first thing most people look at and the least understood. Here is what the number tells you, and what it does not.
THC in a vape means 900 milligrams of THC in a 1 gram device. Flower at 25% has about 250 per gram.
What the number means
THC percentage is THC by weight. A 1 gram vape that tests at 90 percent holds about 900 milligrams of THC. A gram of flower at 25 percent holds about 250. That is why one small pull on a vape can feel like several hits on a joint.
On flower labels you will often see THCa and total THC. THCa is the raw acid form in the plant. Heat converts it to THC. Total THC is the number that accounts for that conversion, and it is the one to compare.
When the number stops mattering
Above a point, THC percentage tells you less than people think. Two flowers at 22 and 28 percent can feel very different because of terpenes and the other cannabinoids in the plant. Lab tests on flower can also vary several points between samples of the same batch.
For vapes the number is more reliable, because oil is uniform. But even there, a 92 and an 88 will feel the same in practice. What you will notice is the strain and the terpene profile.

Pick the strain you enjoy, then check that the batch number is in a sensible range for its type.
How to dose by the number
The useful way to read THC percentage is to let it set your pace. The higher the number, the smaller and slower the first few pulls should be.
| Product | Typical THC | A first dose | Then wait |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flower, 20 to 30% | 25% | One or two small hits | 10 minutes |
| Live resin vape, 60 to 80% | 70% | One short pull | 10 to 15 minutes |
| Distillate vape, 85 to 95% | 90% | One short, gentle pull | 15 minutes |
| Edible | 10mg per piece | Half a piece | 2 hours |
What to look for on the box
- 1Total THC
The number that matters. On flower, not just THCa.
- 2Batch, not brand
The percentage is for this batch. Brands drift between batches.
- 3Test date
Older oil drifts down as THC converts to CBN.
- 4Terpene list
Where it is printed, this tells you more about the experience than the THC number.

Quick answers
What does THC percentage mean?
THC by weight. A 1 gram vape at 90 percent contains about 900 milligrams of THC. A gram of flower at 25 percent contains about 250 milligrams.
Does a higher THC percentage mean a stronger high?
Up to a point. The difference between 20 and 30 percent flower, or 85 and 95 percent oil, is smaller than people expect. Terpenes, the strain and how you pace it matter as much.
What is the difference between THCa and total THC?
THCa is the raw form in the plant that heat turns into THC. Total THC accounts for that conversion and is the number to compare between products.
Why do vapes have so much more THC than flower?
Vape oil is concentrated extract. Distillate is refined until almost nothing is left but THC, so it tests 85 to 95 percent. Flower is whole plant material and tops out around 30 percent.
How strong are Legacy Genetix vapes?
Legacy Genetix all-in-one vapes test at 90 percent plus THC in a 1 gram device. The batch results are printed on the box. Start with one short pull and wait.
