Live resin vs distillate

Two words on every vape menu, and most people cannot say what the difference is. Here is the honest version.

90%+

THC is typical for a distillate oil. Live resin usually tests lower, but carries more of the plant with it.

The basics

Two ways to get oil out of a plant

Distillate is cannabis oil that has been refined until almost nothing is left but THC. Extractors pull the oil out of dried flower, then run it through a still that strips away waxes, chlorophyll and most of the terpenes. What comes out is clear, thick, and usually tests between 85 and 95 percent THC.

Live resin starts earlier. The plant is frozen right after harvest instead of dried and cured, then extracted while still frozen. Freezing locks in the terpenes that would normally cook off during drying, so live resin keeps more of the smell and taste of the fresh plant. It usually tests between 60 and 80 percent THC.

Neither one is "the good one". They are built for different jobs.

What actually changes

The easiest way to think about it: distillate is about potency and consistency, live resin is about flavor and the full plant.

Distillate tastes mostly like whatever terpenes were added back after refining, which is why a distillate cart can be made in any strain flavor. Live resin tastes like the specific batch of flower it came from, so it varies more and costs more.

The numbers

THC by product type

People get surprised by how far apart these are. Flower that tests 25 percent is strong flower. A distillate vape at 90 percent is a different category, which is why a single small pull goes a long way.

Match the oil to the occasion. Potency is one dial, flavor is another, and pacing beats both.

Good questions

Quick answers

What is the difference between live resin and distillate?

Distillate is cannabis oil refined down to mostly THC, usually 85 to 95 percent, with terpenes added back for flavor. Live resin is extracted from frozen fresh plants, keeps its natural terpenes, and usually tests 60 to 80 percent THC.

Is live resin stronger than distillate?

No. Distillate usually has more THC. Live resin has more terpenes and flavor, which some people find gives a fuller effect, but on paper distillate is the more potent oil.

Why is live resin more expensive?

It takes fresh frozen plant material, cold extraction and more careful handling, and you get less oil per pound of plant. Distillate is cheaper to make at scale.

Which is better for beginners?

A distillate all-in-one is simpler: consistent, smooth, and nothing to set up. Just take one small pull and wait 10 to 15 minutes before another.

What are Legacy Genetix vapes?

Legacy Genetix all-in-one vapes are 1 gram devices at 90 percent plus THC in six strains, sold only at Wellgreens stores and Wellgreens delivery in San Diego County.
