The 510 thread battery, explained
Every cartridge in a California dispensary screws onto the same thread. Here is what the number means and how to drive one.
Means 5 millimeters wide, 10 threads. It is the universal screw-on connection for vape carts.
What 510 actually means
510 is the size of the screw thread: 5 millimeters across, with 10 threads. It came from early e-cigarettes and became the standard for cannabis cartridges, so any 510 cart fits any 510 battery. That is the whole point.
A cartridge holds the oil and the coil. The battery supplies the power and, on most models, the controls. Screw the two together and you have a vape pen.
How to use a 510 battery
Most batteries use the same click language. If yours came with no instructions, try these.
- 1Five clicks
Turns the battery on or off. The light flashes to confirm.
- 2Screw on the cart
Snug, then back it off a hair. Over-tightening pushes the center pin down and kills the connection.
- 3Two clicks
Preheat on most models. It warms the oil for a few seconds so the first pull is smooth.
- 4Three clicks
Cycles voltage on adjustable batteries. Lower for flavor, higher for bigger clouds.
- 5Hold and pull
Press the button while you inhale. Draw-activated batteries skip the button.
Which voltage should you use?
Lower voltage means cooler vapor and more flavor. Higher means thicker clouds and a harsher throat, and it burns through oil faster. Start low and climb only if the pull feels thin.
| Setting | Volts | What you get | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low | 2.4 to 2.8V | Cool, maximum flavor | Live resin and rosin carts |
| Medium | 2.9 to 3.3V | Balanced, the everyday setting | Most distillate carts |
| High | 3.4 to 4.0V | Big clouds, harsher, burns oil faster | Thick oil in cold weather, briefly |
Cranking the voltage to the top because "stronger is better".
High voltage does not add THC. It just burns the terpenes and empties the cart sooner. Medium is right for 90 percent plus oil.

Quick answers
What is a 510 thread battery?
A rechargeable vape pen battery with a 510 screw thread, 5 millimeters wide with 10 threads. It is the universal connection, so any 510 cartridge fits any 510 battery.
How do I turn on a 510 battery?
Press the button five times quickly. The light flashes to confirm. Five clicks again turns it off. Draw-activated batteries have no button and turn on when you inhale.
What voltage should I use for a cart?
Start around 2.8 to 3.2 volts. Lower gives more flavor and cooler vapor, higher gives bigger clouds but burns oil faster and tastes harsher.
Why does my 510 battery blink when I attach a cart?
Usually the cart is screwed on too tight and the center pin is not making contact, or the pin is dirty. Back the cart off a quarter turn and wipe the pin with a little rubbing alcohol.
Do I need a 510 battery for a Legacy Genetix vape?
No. Legacy Genetix vapes are all-in-ones with the battery built in. They come charged and ready, with nothing to attach.
